We , as a people have all sorts of rights Rights: in all respect with others it's the possibility to do things to defend our ideas and to receive what we need live a good life. to defend.
We have all kinds of rights to protect ourselves.
What are those rights and where do they come from?
In 1948, 3 years after World War 2, 48 countries voted to have the rights of mankind acknowledged.
They signed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
It is the first international text which describes the rights that each human being should have.
The declaration says;
All humans are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act Act: to do an action, to show and say what we think is justice. towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.
For instance, people have the right
They can do so while respecting the rights of others, public morale, and the well-being of all others.
In reality it is often very different.
Unfortunately, in a lot of countries human rights are not respected.
Québec and Canada each have an agreement,which defines the rights and liberties of all people in Québec and Canada .This agreement is called the ''The Charter Charter: it's an official document written and signed by important well known persons in the world. of Rights and Freedoms''.
There is one for Québec in french and a Canadian one in english.
The Québec one was voted in Parliament in 1975
All laws voted for in Parliament for Québec and Canada are supposed to respect these rights and freedoms.
So the charters give us the opportunity to defend our rights.
Some examples of rights in the Québec charter are;
Defending our rights is not something we can do alone.
We have to work together with everybody because it is a lot of work.
Certain laws protect our rights.
Thanks to big protest Protest: people that come together to change something they believe is not fair. demonstrations,certain rights are now protected by law.
Since 1940 women have the right to vote.
In 1941, due to Due to: because of. pression by the unions, The Social insurance was adopted.
In 1945 the first cheques of family allowance were paid out thanks to pression of workers .
The right to have a roof above your head is a right which is not defined in the charter.
All human rights should be protected by law.
Sometimes we have to put up a fight to have our rights acknowledged.
A lot of people do not participate in social life, or politics,and are not interested to know their rights.
They are excluded.
They have to accept what others decide.
In the charter, our right to a private life is secured, but the law of Social Aid does not respect this right and wants to control the private lives of people, so called to prevent fraud.
In 1988 people on welfare would receive visits of welfare workers,and later in 1995 they even had the right to ask very personal questions.
So our governments themselves do not respect certain of our rights.
The law on secured revenu does not respect the right to decent living conditions.
The government of Québec has adopted a law against poverty and exclusion, but is very slow to put the law to work.
So it is neccessary to be heard!
